Old news.: The national testing center is going to an online testing as of January 2007. Everyone may test at a local testing center, in a town or city that has a Sylvan, Educare, ACT or a like center. They said it would take a few months to install, so the testing would be in May of 2007 over a two week time frame. Check the online site WWW.PTCNY.COM next week for more details.
UPDATE!!! I took the certification test in May, to review the online process! I would suggest trying to take the test during the week. I took the exam on a Saturday, which is really busy for the sites. The sites are at local airports, where the online testing has been established for years for pilots obtaining their licenses. I thought the site was noisy and it was a little hard to concentrate, as planes were landing and taking off right outside the building; but it was well worth the trip to meet the administrator of the test, Edna. What a hoot! She made sure I was at ease with the test instructions and the computer. She made me feel at home.
I am not a strong computer user and was intimidated at the thought of taking any test on a computer screen, but the test itself was well planned. It allows one to return to a previous question if there was concern about the answer and to change the answer if needed. The questions were as promised, a blend of the content outline, diverse and covering all stages of life. I found it challenging and fun at points! The one drawback to the system yet is, it still takes six weeks to get the results.
